- Nhung N. Tran-Davies was inspired to write this book by her own experience of coming to Canada as a refugee from Vietnam as a child. She was given a doll, and as an adult she had the chance to pass on that act of kindness to a Syrian refugee family
- In 2013 Nhung founded the Children of Vietnam Benevolent Foundation. She spoke at the UN's International Organization on Migration in Geneva as part of their "I am a Migrant" campaign to help reduce hate speech and promote tolerance.
