Nicole Brossard’s body of work is recognized as a major influence on contemporary feminist and lesbian writing. Her novel Mauve Desert (partially set in Arizona), a classic of feminist literature, was praised by Margaret Atwood, and her poetry has been cited for its groundbreaking treatment of gender and desire.

Nicole Brossard’s poetry is taught and read in the United States. Her selected poems, Nicole Brossard: Selections (2010, University of California Press), translated by and with an introduction by American poet Jennifer Moxley, was praised by Michael Ondaatje, who called Brossard “one of the outriders of fiction and poetry in North America.”

ACCLAIMED TRANSLATION:
Award-winning writers and translators Erín Moure and Robert Majzels brought this collection into the English language in 2003. Both have won major awards for their translations, and Quill & Quire called their translation “exquisite.”

RENEWED INTEREST IN BROSSARD AND HER WORK:
Brossard’s novel Mauve Desert is slated for an opera adaptation in 2020–21, and Coach House Books will be releasing an anthology of her work (titled Avant Desir: A Nicole Brossard Reader) in April 2020.

ONE OF THE LEADING CANADIAN POETS:
Nicole Brossard is widely recognized as one of the greatest living writers in Quebec and in Canada. She has been honoured with lifetime achievement awards from the Harbourfront Festival, the Blue Metropolis festival, and, in 2019, the Griffin Trust for Excellence in Poetry, and her work has been translated into languages around the world.
